Yesterday by the Beatles in solfège
Reflection:
For this final assignment, I thought that it was quite hard to do! Since I could not find sheet music that I could reference to that I enjoyed, I figured out the notes and solfège myself for each part which took some time. Since I found out what key the song was in, it was much easier to figure the notes and accidentals. Also, I definitely found that it was quite difficult to time the entrance of the strings since it comes in part way through the song so that was a bit difficult. I was able to overcome this because I was able to find the second that it came in at and tried to time it with the melody as well so it matched. I thought that making everything sound coherent was definitely quite difficult because it sometimes sounded like it didn't match up with the other part. I was able to fix this by keeping a consistent tempo to keep everything the same tempo. In general, the most difficult part was just figuring out the instrumental parts of the song since I didn't have a concrete reference as to how the notes went, so that was tough. I think that this final assignment was a good way for us to use all the things we learned in this course to use. This is because we have to figure out rhythms, solfège, actively listen, as well as finding the home tone and more. In this assignment, I think that I was able to put all these skills that I learned to use in order to help me figure out the different parts. Also, I think that it was a good way for us to figure pieces, without references such as sheet music if we did not find one that was suitable to use. I definitely found it easier to figure out the parts since I was actively listening to the different instrumental parts and that helped a lot in finding the rhythms and notes, especially when there were chords. Overall, it was quite a fun assignment to do despite the work!

Exercises 38, 41, 129
Reflection:
During this assignment this week, what I thought was most difficult was definitely the altered solfège. This is because I am still not completely familiar with the names as well as the pitches as well when it goes down or up a semitone. Also, I thought it was quite difficult to do switch from the altered solfège back to the original solfège and this was present in each of the canons. I was able to fix this by repeating the pitches of the notes so I could internalize the pitches before going through the canon again. I think what was different compared to the first time I did these canons were the fact that I was more familiar with the notes, so I definitely solved things faster than the first time. Also, I thought that since we never had a preliminary run-through like with the other canons, it was a little bit more difficult to find the starting pitch in the beginning for some reason. Using the tuning fork was very useful in the fact I could start from a certain note and find the pitch that way, instead of having no way to find the note besides the piano. The octave jumps were quite difficult too, since it is such a high jump I was not always sure if I was singing the correct note or not. I think that singing through the scale up and down before sing the piece helped a lot with this, since I was able to have a sense of what the note sounded like even if I forgot. I think this assignment was very good for us to try and learn to solve these kinds of problem ourselves instead of being helped by the teacher all the time. Doing this ourselves forces us to find a solution instead of being told by a teacher what the answer of method is. It was a very insightful assignment!

rHYTHMS OF POP SONGS

Reflection:
While doing this assignment, I thought that it was very difficult to hear the rhythms in the song. Due to the fact that there were multiple instruments and voices, it was difficult to focus solely on the rhythms since there was so much going on. Also, I thought it was quite difficult to find rhythms with ties because it is difficult to figure out whether it is a note of longer value or a tie that is held through the bar-line sometimes. I was able to figure this out because I did a process of elimination as to what note value it would be and was able to find that ties were held through into the next bar. I think that this was a good way of finding this since I was not sure about the rhythms and by going through each note value, I was able to find the rhythm of the melody. Another thing that was difficult for me was finding rests as well, which was hard since I wasn't sure whether or not it was part of a held note or they stopped singing. Since there are many instruments being played along with the voices, it is difficult to differentiate the whether they have stopped singing or are still holding the note in some areas of the song. I think that this was a very good activity to do because it was able to test our ears and whether or not we can hear rhythms through many different things going on such as different instruments playing at the same time. Also, it was a good assignment to help us to focus on rhythms when others are playing different rhythms at the same time, because it is difficult to hear one specific rhythm when there are multiple being played since it can confuse people on whether or not it is part of the rhythm for the melody or not. Overall, I think it definitely shows the difficulty in finding rhythms when there are multiple instruments and voices singing difficult things.

Redo of canon 39
Canon 39
Reflection:
During this assignment, I found that when going through this canon, the hardest was definitely having the unexpected fa from time to time. This is because in the beginning of this canon, it is constantly going up and down the tonic chord and when there is a sudden fa, it is sometimes hard to transition. I found that constantly going over that certain bar and familiarizing myself with the melody helps a lot in getting the fa in the recording. Also I thought that the jump from do ti so was a bit tricky as well, because one would assume you go down the la, but it instead goes to the so which can surprise some people. I thought that it was an interesting choice as well with going back up to the la and then the fi which is ver tricky. This is because it jumps from ti to so, and then it goes back to la and then suddenly goes down to fi. I found that this jump was quite difficult and had to practice this continuously by repeating the jump and internalizing the pitch from la to fi which was very unique. Overall, I thought that this time the software was a lot easier to use since I have used it a few times now. I really enjoyed the melody of this piece, A major is always so cheerful in my opinion! I also thought this was a good activity for you to sing solfège faster since it is allegro, and that means that you have to be very familiar with the solfège and the rhythm so it is accurate. Overall, it was a very fun assignment!

Going through each other's canons
Reflection:
During my meeting with Sarah, we both went through each of our canons and discussed our thought process when composing. When listening to Sarah's canon, I really enjoyed the simplicity of her melody, it allowed for the the melody to shine through whenever it appeared. Also I really enjoyed how it sounded like bells chiming since it repeated many times as well. When learning to sing her song, I thought that sometimes it was hard remembering the sequence of re to fa and then fa to la since it is not a common jump. I had to familiarize myself with the melody more through more repetition, but it was easy to get after since the main melody repeats many times. Something that I found interesting about Sarah's canon was how she added in a lot of fa, which indicated to me that she really likes fa! I think what is important when teaching someone a canon is to let them figure it tout themselves which is what we did and we then pointed out to each other the hard or unusual parts in the canons. Pointing out the more unusual or difficult parts, allows the student to pay more attention to this part when they are singing the canon and have more caution when coming across that part. This is a good skill to use for ourselves and for future students, identifying the difficult areas first and going through it before trying the whole piece. Overall, this was very fun to do and was a good learning experience that I can apply to my future students.

Canon in DOrian
Reflection:
When doing this canon assignment, one of the things that I thought were most difficult was making sure the harmonies make sense and to make sure that I did not use the wrong harmonies and notes. I also thought that it was a still tricky in making the recordings line up sometimes, but I was able to do so by changing placement of the recording and sometimes change the tempo of the part. When writing the canon I thought what was a bit difficult to do was the ending because you have to make sure that it is dominant to tonic, and you have to make sure to build the tonic chord in the 3 parts. Overall though, I thought it was a very good experience! Writing a canon is definitely not easy, you have to make sure it sounds good against the other parts and not too dissonant. Also, when recording a canon it is quite difficult to line the 3 voices up because sometimes you sing faster than the other time and that messes the alignment up. With practice though, it is easy to fix on soundtrap. I think that learning to write canons help give us an understanding as to how each voice fits in with the other when sung together. We always sing canons but we do not know how to compose them, and learning them help us have reasons as to why they sound this way and what kind of require there are when we compose a canon. It was a good learning experience to understand this, giving us the information and knowledge that we can use with our students in the future because this is also something they will be learning as well.

Dorian backing Improv

Reflection:
When doing this activity with the backing track, what was most difficult was improvising jumps. This is because jumps are harder for me to think of on the spot, so it took me longer to familiarize myself with the jumps that I wanted to add into my improvisation. Also, I think that it was quite difficult for me to go down the scale compared to going up the scale as well, because of this I sing mostly up the scale. Though I mostly sang up the scale, I still tried to go down but could mostly only go down to the low la. To fix this, I practiced the dorian scale below the octave to familiarize myself with the pitch so I could move around freely while improvising. Something that I also had a hard time on was sometimes finding the pitch of re, I think this is because of words more than the pitch since I am more used to going back to do. I was able to fix this by internalizing re so I could remember what pitch to go back to. I think that this activity was very fun to do, because I got to improvise though it was a bit stressful to think of a melody on the spot. Something else I thought was very fun about this was the fact that it was in the dorian scale! Though it was difficult since I am not familiar with the scale yet, it was still very fun since dorian is so funky and different! Improvising with backing tracks is very fun to do!

Scarborough Fair Finished Dictation
Reflection:
In this activity I thought that it was very difficult the first time around to complete the dictation for this. This was because the second half was a bit hard to listen to since it was in a minor key. I also had some trouble with the ending because sometimes I was not sure whether or not it was ending on re, since it sounded a bit different but after going through the song a second time after getting familiar with the melody. From this dictation, I think that the most important thing was to remember the melody better because after becoming more and more familiar with the melody, it was a lot easier to find the solfège. I think that because I was not familiar with the melody of the song, on the day of the dictation I had quite a hard time figuring out a large chunk of the solfège in this song. I think that allowing us to do this and finish the melody a second time is good because I am able to go through this again and analyze what I did wrong and think of other ways I could have found the solfège, since there is no time restraint. Also, I think that since I am still familiarizing myself with the Dorian mode, I am finding it hard to find solfège now but, with more practice, it is definitely helping!

Canon 131
Reflection:
While making this canon, I thought that the most difficult part was mostly figuring out the soundtrap website. But going through and testing out the website out beforehand definitely helped, since I am not very good at technology! Other than the technology problem, I think that the most difficult part of this was definitely recording and being sure to record in the same tempo so all of the recordings can match up properly. I definitely had to make some recordings fast because I recorded it in a slower tempo than the others. Something else that I was having trouble with while doing this assignment was the jump from do to la because I am not as familiar with this jump as others and that took some practice to be able to do it smoothly. Some things that I thought went well was that recording did go quite smoothly other than that jump from do to la. I think that this is because we have practiced this canon before in class and that definitely helped me record this smoothly. Also I think that it was a very fun activity! compared to the last time we did something like this for bring me little water, this one was quite a lot of fun to do! This is because I becoming more and more family with music editing softwares now since I have more chances to use it now! Overall, I think that this was a very fun activity and would definitely record canons again!

Reflection:
When practicing for these musical examples, I thought that doing them in the parallel minor was definitely much more difficult. It was very difficult to figure out the pitches for me, since it would be in the natural minor so I had to think about what pitch would be different. I think that by going through the natural minor scale in the parallel minor really helped a lot with what the pitches sounded like. There were some jumps in the examples that were a bit difficult because I haven't seen them very often, such as the mi to la, but it became much easier after more repetition practice. Something that I thought I did quite well was definitely keeping the key because it was actually quite easy to change the key unconsciously when singing the parallel minor. I think this exercise was a good exercise for us to get more familiar with the minor scale and how we can change from major to minor easily. It definitely wasn't easy since it is still quite new for us, but I feel like now I am more familiar with minor scales now. I really enjoyed this exercise and was able to learn many new things from it as well!

When practicing these patterns, I thought that the most difficult thing was the mslmmrd and s'rrl's'rr. This was because the intervals between the notes were unfamiliar ones and were intervals that we did not do often. I was able to familiarize myself with them more through repetition, as well as visualizing the pitch before singing it if it was a pitch sung before. Also, I thought that the patterns for this recording were patterns that we had not done much of and so that led to longer practicing time. The new patterns forced to listen more attentively and figure how each interval sounded so I could get more familiar with the leaps of the pitches. I thought that this assignment was very useful because it has been a while since I have sung solfège and so it was good to familiarize myself with it again. Also, it was fun to have new intervals to learn since we focused on different ones last semester and so it was challenging and different. Learning these new leaps can help me with reading in solfège faster so I can use solfège whenever I see music, without needing to actually play anything.

You're Beautiful bassline singing
Reflection:
In this assignment, I thought that it was very fun to sing the bassline melody to this song! This song is a song that I am familiar with and so it was fun to listen to it and figure out the bassline melody! I think that what was most difficult for me was near the end of the chorus when he sings "And I don't think that I'll see her again, But we shared a moment that will last 'til the end" because it modulates a bit into a minor key and so that confused me a bit but I went through the scale and tried to find the best pitch that matched the melody. Also, I thought that this song stayed mainly in the tonic and changed sometimes to the dominant. Other than that, there was a lot of step by step motion in the bassline melody as well. In general, I thought that this was a very fun assignment to do! I thought it was a good assignment for us to get back into solfège with since it has been a while. Also, I thought that it was good for us to do this assignment because it forced us to listen intently for the bassline melody and how they correspond to the melody line as well.

When working on these two canons, I thought it was actually quite interesting to figure out pitches and octaves since it did not have pre-determined key for us. Something that was quite difficult was the large leaps from so to ti or from la to fa, they were a lot more difficult than I had anticipated. A way I was able to fix this was just repetitive practice, because you just need to get familiar with the notes and to remember the amount of space between the notes. Also, low so to mi was a bit difficult too but I was able to fix this by recognizing that it was a major sixth, and I remembered this the entire way through. For the second canon, number 23, I enjoyed that they kept jumping between the so, mi and do which was quite fun to do. The leaps were not too bad as well, they were quite manageable. Overall, I think that this was a fun exercise! The canons were able to help us get familiar with leaps that we have not done often. I think this is a good exercise to practice leaps and to help us practice to retain pitch when there long rests.

Reflection:
When I was coming up with this composition based on my improvisation, I thought what was most difficult was finding the chords that fit with the melody that I had written. This is because sometimes the chord I thought would go with the melody did not sound nice. I also thought that it was difficult to pick a melody to stick to because in the improvisation video, I sing many different melodies and that made it difficult to choose what melodies would go well together and be similar to what was being sung in the video. Thinking about the rhythm was quite difficult too because it was my note lengths in the video were not always accurate, and when I was composing, I needed to know what kind of phrasing I wanted as well. I think what went well in this assignment was that it was quite fun to build a melody properly and notate on paper, it gave solidity to what I created in the improv video. Also, I thought that I did quite a good job on the resolution of the composition since I properly ended it with the I chord and I added predominant and the dominant seventh as well which I thought gave a nice crunch in the melody. I thought this assignment was very fun to do because I was able to use the improvisation that I came up with to create actual measures of written music and I was able to use the theory I learned! Also, it was very fun to be able to pick and choose from random melodies within my video since I had so many different melodies. It was definitely a good learning experience as to how we can make concrete music from things that we make up on the spot…but that’s music!
